Almost Two Tons Of Food and Drugstore Goods Donated To Prague Mayor’s Advent Charity

A total of 1,982 kg of food and drugstore goods were collected in the traditional Mayor’s Advent collection this year, which is almost half a ton more than in the last collection. The collection was organised by the City of Prague in cooperation with the Food Bank for Prague and the Central Bohemian Region, and took place on Thursday, 14 December, on Prague’s Mariánské náměstí.

“The result of the collection is gratifying. Not only that, more food, drugstore products and other aid were chosen than in the past. But above all, it was again shown that human cohesion works after all,” said the Mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda.

In the run-up to Christmas, the Mayor’s Advent collection took place in front of the New Town Hall on Mariánské náměstí in Prague 1. The collected products will go to help all those in need, especially seniors living on the poverty line, single parents and unhoused people.

“I am extremely proud of the results of this year’s Mayor’s Advent collection, where we managed to collect almost half a ton more food and other essentials than before,” said Alexandra Udženija, deputy mayor for social affairs, housing and healthcare. “This success is a clear proof of the incredible solidarity and generosity of the citizens of Prague and everyone who participated in the collection.”

The collection involved the participation of the mayor of Prague and representatives of the capital city, as well as employees of the Prague Municipality, representatives of various embassies, institutions, companies and the general public. Some of the most actively involved companies included Mattoni, Rossmann, Coca-Cola, Mondelez and Nestlé.

People helped the most by donating basic non-perishable food and drugstore products. Canned foods, rice and pulses, shelf-stable milk, oil, soups, baby food and also basic and children’s hygiene products were especially welcome.

“Each kilogram of donated food will help people in need and their children forget their worries at least for a while and experience Christmas in joy and peace,” said Věra Doušová, director of the Food Bank for Prague and the Central Bohemian Region.
